Bay and Beyond Sea Kayak Tours [60]

Bay and Beyond Sea Kayak Tours is based in the peaceful coastal village of South Durras on the south coast of NSW. Surrounded by the greater Murramarang National Park, we are 10 minutes north of Batemans Bay, two hours from Canberra and four hours south of Sydney.

The local waters of the Eurobodalla Shire are a mecca for boaters of all types. Murramarang National Park has the second longest stretch of undeveloped open coast in the state. There are also pristine coastal lakes, off shore islands, the Bay and the Clyde Estuary with its tidal limit stretching 35kms inland. We invite you to explore it with us under the power of your own paddle!

Bay and Beyond is accredited by the Outdoor Recreation Industry Council and the Tourism Council of Australia as safe and professional operators. Bay and Beyond holds a NSW Waterways licence (HD 0288) and current Australian Canoeing instructor qualifications. We do our utmost to provide safe, educational and fun kayaking experiences.

Bay and Beyond specialise in tours, tuition, extended programs and kayak hire. Tours are offered all year round, catering both for those seeking a peaceful paddle or an adventurous challenge. We also offer “tagalong tours” at a reduced rate for those with their own sea kayaks.

Where We Paddle

Durras Lake is the most pristine medium size coastal lake in New South Wales. It is surrounded by the greater Murramarang National Park with no foreshore development. You can be assured to spot significant water birds and jumping fish as you go. Enjoy the magnificent Spotted Gums and Burrawang Palms meeting the waters edge. Join us for a peaceful paddle during the day or in the evening as the sun sets over the lake. On dark nights experience the phosphorescence phenomenon.

The Clyde River, famous for its oysters, is one of the cleanest and prettiest rivers in New South Wales. Its headwaters are 165km inland in the Budawangs with only 5% of the forest in the Clyde watershed having been cleared. Enjoy a tidal journey.

The Murramarang coastline is a spectacular and more challenging area for coastal paddling. Rocky cliffs broken up by secluded coves with beautiful beaches extend the length of the Murramarang National Park. There are a number of islands along the coast which are nature reserves for an abundance of bird life. It is also an area of geological significance with the transition from the Sydney Sandstone Basin to the Lachlan Fold occurring at Dark Beach.

Batemans Bay itself has various islands and creeks to explore. Cullendulla Creek has wonderful mangroves and wetlands. Snapper Island is an easy and protected paddle, around which you may see little penguins. We often have encounters with dolphins, turtles and other marine life while paddling in the Bay.

The Tollgate Islands tour is for paddlers with some experience, approximately 3 kilometres from the shore at the entrance to the Bay. This is a fantastic trip of discovery and challenge.

The Sea Kayaks

The equipment and sea kayaks we use are updated regularly and in great condition. Our fleet consists of single and double Current Designs sea kayaks. These are stable yet manoeuvrable craft, with a foot rudder, watertight hatches for storage, a comfortable seat and full deck lines. All safety equipment is provided.

Sea Kayak Rental

We rent our sea kayaks on flat water environments only; Durras lake and the Clyde Estuary. (If you would like an ocean paddle you need to book a guided tour). A full safety brief is given at the time of hiring and all necessary safety gear is included. Overnight rental is available. We offer a drop off and pick up service or you can transport the boats on your own roof racks.

Courses and Programs

Bay and Beyond is able to design personalised kayak programs for your group. We can suggest 1, 2 or 3 day programs with an option for intensive base camp skills sessions or an expedition style trip. Options exist for flat water, river or ocean experiences. We focus on creating sea kayak programs to meet learning outcomes as specified by you and your organisation or school. We are able to include a range of interpretive and educational activities to complement your paddling experience. A female guide/instructor is available should you require one.

Whether using our boats or your own, we offer training and tuition to meet your needs. Private or group kayaking clinics are available at a variety of venues and based on the skill level of the participants. We take great care to teach you the safest and easiest techniques to help you progress.

Tuition sessions include:

  • Stroke development
  • Rescue and re-entry techniques
  • Surf launching and landing
  • Rolling – the ultimate self rescue
  • Coastal paddling

Client Testimonials

“You and your business have had such a positive impact on my life since, as a complete novice, I arrived to meet you with my brand new Inuit Explorer sea kayak.

At 51 years old I had never even sat in a kayak. Initially I literally fell out of my boat while I was getting into it. You worked with me patiently while I gained confidence and you stepped me up one level at a time so that my safety was never compromised. Your patience was especially helpful while you were teaching me to roll (back up of course). After your skilful, well planned guidance I am comfortable out at sea and getting back through the surf. Whilst I still have much to learn you have opened up a new world for me. I can’t thank you enough. No stopping me now, I’m having a ball!

You have also escorted me on some fantastic tours in the Eurobodalla region. We have visited this area for over 40 years and I really had no idea how beautiful the South Coast was until we got on the water in the kayaks. What a difference it is looking at the land from a kayak compared to looking at water from the land.

No doubt you’ll introduce this world on the water to many others who will benefit from your skills and local knowledge. Once again thank you for the new opportunities you’ve opened up for me.”

Peter Shands, Queanbeyan.

“Ocean kayak skills are essential for our south coast. Bay and Beyond are becoming well known to many Canberra kayakers for their diverse tours, as well as their professional training. I can highly recommend them for their patient approach to training – but most importantly their uncompromising approach to safety. The ‘safety-first’ approach adopted by Bay and Beyond underpins all their training and tours. This instils confidence in all their clients from novices to those undertaking new training challenges.

I owe much of my confidence and ability in the ocean to the training and experience I have gained from Bay and Beyond. Some of these skills include, self assisted rescues, rolling, bracing, surf entry and surf landings.

When one is not seeking training challenges from Bay and Beyond, their tours are simply magic. Phil and Carolyn are very client focused and flexible regarding tailoring tours to one’s interests and abilities. I can especially recommend the night tours on Durras Lake which are quite surreal and calming. The plunger coffee and homemade muffins for the mandatory stops on magnificent remote beaches are legendary. Bay and Beyond’s understanding of natural history and the marine environment simply becomes the icing on the muffins!!”
